The Mayans and the study of the cosmos

If there is a culture that stood out in North and Central America that was the Mayan civilization, which was located mainly in Mexico. The Mayan culture had a close relationship with religion and with the study of the universe. Today we can then talk about the mayan astronomy.

Several thousand years before Christ, the Mayans already had a great mastery of techniques of astronomical observation and identification of celestial bodies and cosmic phenomena. For example, the story goes that on February 15, 3379 BC the Mayans identified an eclipse and studied it. Proof of this are the inscriptions found in the temples and pyramids.

Today the analysis of the famous Mayan calendar, which according to its measure of time began thousands of years before Christ and that its end date is the December 26, 2012. It has not yet been possible to know for sure why the calendar ends on this specific date, although we know that it has a lot to do with the religious book of Popol Vuh. There are those who assure that it is the exact date of the end of the world, others affirm that it is the passage to a new era. What do you think? The truth is that apart from speculation, the Mayan calendar consisted of 365 days distributed in 18 months of 20 days each.

Returning to the theme of the temples, it is worth mentioning that for example the Chichen Itza step pyramid It was built based on studies of the universe and it is thus that to ascend we must climb 365 stairs. Coincidence?
