Geography makes use of the different types of maps depending on the information you want to show. The only thing they all have in common is a compass rose - which indicates where north, south, east and west are - and a scale so you can estimate distances.

Climate map: Provides general information about the climate and precipitation (rain and snow) of a region. Cartographers use colors to differentiate between different climatic and precipitation zones.

Economic map: In this case, the information they offer is relative to the type of natural resources or the predominant economic activity in a given area. To pinpoint their location, cartographers use symbols. For example, on an economic map of the United States, oranges would appear over the state of Florida, which would indicate that this fruit is grown there.

Physical map: On this type of maps falls the responsibility to illustrate the physical characteristics of a region, such as mountains, rivers or lakes. The colors help both to differentiate the water from the ground and to show the elevations of the terrain. Green indicates low altitude, while orange and brown are used for higher areas.

Political map: It is one of the most used. They indicate the boundaries between countries, states or cities. For example, on a political map of Europe all the countries of this continent are represented, with the capital city of each marked with a star.

Road map: Reports on roads, airports, train tracks, cities and other points of interest in a given area. Its purpose is to provide everything necessary so that people can plan a route or know where they are with respect to another point.

Topographic map: It is a representation of the relief of the terrestrial surface of a determined area. Lines that are too close together indicate steep terrain, while lines that are too far apart indicate that the terrain is flat.
