Everything you need to know about the Ural Mountains

Ural mountains

The Urals are a 2.500-kilometer-long mountain range that is divided between the countries of Russia and Kazakhstan. Along the Ural River, it forms a natural border between the continents of Europe and Asia, in addition to one of the oldest mountain ranges on Earth (between 250 and 300 million years).

They separate the Eastern European Plain or Russian Plain (the largest mountain-free part of the continent) from the West Siberian Plain, which is the largest expanse of uninterrupted lowlands in the world.

Urals map

From north to south, the Ural Mountains go from the arctic tundra to the deserts of the Caspian Sea. It crosses very different landscapes, which is why this mountain range is divided into four well-differentiated sections:

The polar section, covered by the tundra. The north, a rocky and treeless part where the highest peak is located (Narodnaya, 1.895 meters). The central Urals, a mineral rich area with many mountain passes. And the southern section, composed of several tall ridges arranged in parallel.

The Urals are home to numerous caves, crevices and underground rivers, although they are their deposits of mineral stones, especially those precious and semi-precious stones, their most coveted good, so much so that some of them are already completely spent.

All the major cities of the Ural Mountains are Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk, Ufa, and Perm, while its population consists mainly of Russians, with some Bashkirs, Tatars, Udmurts and Komis.
